Body Language, Using Physical Space
If you want to convey an image of power, many believe that it is best to stand. President Franklin Roosevelt was a polio sufferer and had much difficulty standing without assistance. Knowing the importance of a solid stance he would grab the sides of his podium and hang on for dear life to keep his position. He did this when he addressed the nation, press and congress. It worked because he has gone down in history as one of the most powerful and influential presidents in our history.
Standing gives that sense of power because the person takes up more space. When you move around a room this can make the others feel slightly threatened. You’re taking up even more space forcing others to use less.
Although standing seems to give the most powerful image it isn’t always appropriate. At a meeting many times you need to be seated. To give an image of power while sitting you can stretch your legs out. Again, you’re showing that you’re taking up space. Have your arms at the side of your chair. The more visible you are and the more space you can be seen to be taken, generally the better.
There are other kinds of movements that indicate feeling. Next time you’re in a store look at some of the customers. Are any of them holding their chin or scratching their face. This is an indication of concern. They may be considering the purchase of something but have some doubts. They may be wondering if they can afford this or if it is the right item.
Gestures can tell a lot about what a person is thinking. Watch someone the next time the speak, if they touch their nose or any other part of their face, this could mean they are not being entirely honest with you. When you are speaking to another person, try to keep any head movement to a minimum. This looks like you’re trying to gain approval. If you want to convey a message of power then keep your head from moving.
Body language is quite fascinating. By using it effectively you can enhance what you say and really get your meaning across. By knowing what to look for in others, you can tell if what their saying is genuine. Body language is a very useful tool. If used wisely, you can attain your goals. You can also learn who your friends are.
