Tips on Body Language

When someone views us, they generally look at what we are doing. Our body language accounts for nearly 90% of a conversation. Many times someone is saying one thing but there body is telling a much different story.

Body language is a very useful tool. In fact salesmen would much rather conduct business face to face rather than over the phone. The reason is body language. By using the correct body language they are much more convincing. They have a much easier time manipulating the situation when they are in someone’s presence. Speaking on the phone is much easier, but people react much more to what they see not what they hear.

Body language is also important to those in the business world. They must put on a brave face in what can be a very stressful environment. By controlling their body language they can give off the impression that they choose and manipulate the situation to their advantage.

Everyone usually thinks that the power position is standing up straight with your shoulders back. This will only work for you if this is your natural posture. Forcing this position will create tension and this will show in your body language. We all have a natural posture that develops over time. Our natural posture is the best to work from. Without the presence of tension we can convey the best body language possible.

Your natural posture is important but there are some positions that you should avoid in certain situations. Standing with your arms folded and leaning to one side makes you look like your bored and disinterested. This is not the message to convey if you listening to your boss or in a job interview. However, standing with your shoulders up arms at the side with your fists closed generally conveys the message that you’re ready for anything.

Body language is an important tool. By being aware of your own body language, you can start to give the messages you want. By understanding body language, you will be able to tell if someone is telling you the truth. Keep an eye on what someone is doing rather than what they are saying. The body will tell us much more.
