The Importance of Body Language

When you find yourself in a situation where you must put forth an argument in order to sell a product or even to "sell" yourself, one part of your presentation that you will want to keep in mind is your body language.

Body language is being increasingly recognized for its importance in our everyday communication, and this is even more true in a situation in which you must posit an argument to a group of people. Successful businesspersons, presenters, and salespeople are all aware of the effect that body language can have on an audience or potential client.

In its essence, body language is a form of communication that takes place largely in the subconscious, both for the listener and the speaker. Your body language will have a major effect on how you come across and how your argument is received, so it is necessary that you control your unconscious movements to reflect the message you are sending.

The most important thing when it comes to body language is to remember to keep an open, positive demeanor. Avoid any habits that will send the message that you are closed off; you may find you have to focus on different movements depending on whether you are sitting or standing.

Individuals who are standing up need to avoid "closing" language such as putting hands in pockets and even crossing arms. Standing with your hands behind your back is preferable, and if you are being queried always lean slightly forward (this can be as simple as tilting your head forward) to indicate interest.

Body language is often imperative in your presentation. Maintaining an open, interested demeanor is key to an effective pitch.
