How to Persuade
We would all love to have power over others at any given time. We would love people to be do what we ask when we ask them to. Unfortunately for most of us, we have to deal with excuses or just plain refusal. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to get people to perform how you wanted them to? Instead of getting an endless stream of excuses or abuse you get a result.
The good news is that this is possible. There are ways of using persuasion to get the results you want. Persuasion does not involve threats, torture or including people into hypnotic, helpless states. It’s simply a way of changing how you ask and present requests which gets the other party to do what you want.
Quite a common persuasion technique is known as the cause and effect relationship. Basically something causes something else to happen. For example, if you put in an extra hour of work each night this month you’ll end up with an extra 500 dollars. Or if you put away 100 dollars a month in savings, in 30 years you’ll have 100.000 dollars.
This technique is used quite often by sales people and those in the investment industry. They come up with the numbers and apply simple cause and effect relationship scenarios. The result is the possible sale of an investment plan or product.
This can also be used at home or in the workplace. If you’re asking a family member to do something and they do nothing but whinge and whine, try applying a simple cause and effect relationship. If your get what I need from the store we’ll be able to have an extra nice dinner tonight. Or, if you make this trip for me you can get yourself something nice. You should try to keep the outcome as positive as possible. That way the person will want to complete the task.
Stop listening to the endless excuses and whining. Change your approach on how you request things. By practicing the persuasion technique of cause and effect, you can get better results with less stress and strain being placed on others. Better to convince them they want to do it then demanding.
