Flirting and Body Language
Body language is used by all of us in so many situations, but body language may be best known for its place in acts of flirting. Americans tend to communicate much through their use of words, as we are members of a high context culture. That is, the messages we communicate are highly invested in the context, or the words, of our message exchanges. However, we will also often interject some other subtle messages through means such as body language. Sometimes it is just less threatening to insert a sentiment in there with a hidden body language message rather than saying how we feel outright!
Take, for instance, an occasion when you have been secretly attracted to someone you have only recently met and you just do not quite have the confidence to scream your attraction out loud. What are some of the ways that you might convey your feelings while still securely saving face? The science of body language suggests that you might have gently brushed your hand up against this person in a discrete but slightly suggestive way. Also, you may have let your gaze linger longer with theirs than you would ordinarily. The whole group of body language messaging utilizes all parts of your body to do the talking, from your eyes to your touch to all those parts in between!
