Closed Body Language

In the case of body language clusters of closed, they can oftentimes be misrepresented as a defensive body language indicator.

The language of closure means exactly that, the body is closing up.  The signs of closure can include a person slightly bringing their exposed limbs together right up to actually curling up into a tight ball, mimicking the fetal position.  In extreme cases of this type of closure there can be a rhythmic rocking of the body.  This type of body language can sometimes be confused with a person have a delusion or suffering from depression.

Within the scope of a person exhibiting closure body language there are tell-tale signs of this occurring, including a person crossing one or both of their arms over the centre of their body, or they could be folded tightly, or one holding the other.  Other more indirect arm crossing movements include resting an arm on top of a table or their leg, or, even perhaps arms loosely crossed at the wrists.  With this arm crossing movement comes varying levels of tension that might be exhibited in both the arms and shoulders ranging from a droop in the arms and shoulders to a much more clenched type version of tension.

Included with the closure cluster is a leg crossing and looking down from the other person or averting their eyes in another direction.  Leg crossing can vary.  A person in a closure body language exhibition can cross their legs in different ways such as crossing their ankles, crossing their knees, or a tense wrap-around.  No matter the type of leg crossing that occurs, they are indicators of the person exhibiting closed body language.

There are many reasons for closed body language, but it is important to not jump to conclusions about the person exhibiting these signs as there may be triggers to why their body language has changed.  For instance, when a person is in a threatening environment our body language turns to a defensive mode, wherein a person will look to make their body smaller thus reducing the offending person’s target size.  Sometimes a person may use closure body language in situations where they are hiding something, are genuinely cold and this is their method of retaining heat, or, just plain relaxing.

No matter what signs of closure body language is being exhibited, you need to examine the situation first before jumping to conclusions.
