Avoid Negative Buzzwords!
In any situation in which you are positing an argument, whether you are selling a high or low end product, an idea, or even yourself, it is imperative to avid that use of any negative buzzwords, even when they do not even relate to yourself. There are several words that must always be avoided as you try to make your presentation in order to give your listeners no indication at all that anything would possibly go wrong. For example, it is natural to refer to a given situation as a “problem”; this is how most of us have grown up. In today’s business world, however, a problem indicates something that cannot be dealt with; an insurmountable obstacle. When you are organizing your presentation or pitch, do not refer to any roadblocks you have or expect to encounter as problems- refer to them instead as “challenges”.
Using the term challenge has incredibly positive connotations. It puts the issue forward as one that you can grapple with; it does not minimize the issue itself, but turns the possibly negative spin into a positive situation, while demonstrating that you are the person who is able to rise to the given challenge. Anytime you encounter a situation in which you may need to put forth a persuasive argument, remember to use strong, positive words in place of negative ones.
